The Mother & The Dog !

Man’s best friend has no hope in the far east ! They torch them alive and chop them for a good feast !

She was the Christ of the scapegoats, the poor sacrificial Lamb !

Bearing the cross of bigotry, she stood forlorn in the pile of Horns* !

Framed and stoned by the scandalmongers, forced to sport the accursed Crown !

Sold to the blood thirsty ears and eyes, She was indeed the Christ of the scapegoats !

Man’s best friend has no hope in the far east ! For them it is only another beast !

The chambers were pregnant with flammable air ! The beast ready to devour her in its dinette of despair !

Man’s best friend has no hope in the far east ! They feel nothing, not even guilt — at the least !

Oh the beast of flames ! Have you got no warmth? Didn’t you glimpse at her eyes?

The eyes that yearned for her beloveds! Yearning to gaze in to a known eye, aching to depart in their midst ! How could you torch her skin ?

The tender skin that caressed her child ! How did you burn her flesh ? every pound of it, had a story to tell !

Man’s best friend has no hope in the far east ! In our realm , we weep over it’s death !

BACKDROP:

This poem was written for a mother who was cremated in Sri Lanka due to local COVID19 guidelines. She was a muslim, and the Islamic funeral rites require the bodies to be buried. While the WHO ensured that bodies could be buried, the Sri Lankan Government thought otherwise. Many speculate that this was a result of the overall anti-muslim rhetoric within the majority community and the newly elected government.

My poem attempts to make people relate to and empathize with the values of different communities. When a dog is a pet for you and me, it is food elsewhere.

She was admitted to a Hospital in Angoda, Sri Lanka. Which loosely translates in english to “Pile of Horns”. Thus the reference in the poem.
